Aleks Skibicki

Aleks Skibicki is an avid community volunteer and was recently named the 2019 Spirit of Greendale Award recipient. You very likely have seen Aleks around the schools and the Village sharing his time and talents with students and the community. Aleks has been involved in the Girl Scouts for 9 years and is currently the co-leader for Area 134 (Greendale, Greenfield, Hales Corners). He is the president of the Greendale Education Foundation and chairperson of Step Up to Better Health. You may also know Aleks via his membership with the Greendale Lions, the Village’s Park & Rec Committee or from his years as treasurer/president with Highland View Elementary School’s PTO. Aleks has also been coaching soccer since 2012.

Aleks lives in Greendale with his wife Kathleen and his daughter Evie. Kathleen and Evie can very often be found volunteering right alongside Aleks!

Thank you, Aleks, for your amazing contributions to Greendale.

Q: What inspired you or led you to volunteer?

A: If I want the community to be all it can be, I need to do my part.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Greendale, and what do you love there?

A: That’s a tough one; we have a lot of good ones to choose from. Most often we end up at Ricardo’s Pizza.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in Greendale?

A: 20 years. Our first house we bought was in Greendale.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?

A: Back to Hawaii because it is amazing there.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in Greendale?

A: Karyn Birmingham. She’s always enthusiastic and fun.

Q: What is your favorite movie OR what is the first movie you remember seeing in a theatre?

A: The Nightmare Before Christmas is still the movie that I feel the happiest when I watch. It may not be a classic but I always feel happy afterwards. I think The Empire Strike Back was the first movie I saw in a theatre.

Q: What advice would you give a crowd of people?

A: Be brave. Nothing good ever happened until somebody was brave enough to do it. Our unofficial motto in Girl Scouts is Bravery – it gets stuff done.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

A: Returning to Hawaii. Other than that, I really don’t have too much of a bucket list. Most of the stuff I’ve wanted to do, I’ve done.

Q: What are 3 bands you would like to see (dead or alive)?

A: I’d love to see U2 again, They Might Be Giants and John Williams (from Star Wars fame). I want to see him directing a live orchestra; that would be amazing.

Q: What current local business makes you the most nostalgic about Greendale?

A: Panther Pub makes me feel nostalgic about Greendale. They have old pictures, the old score board; it’s like walking into a Greendale museum. It may not be a nostalgic business, but it makes me feel nostalgic.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about Greendale?

A: Our celebrations and festivals are perfectly sized, not too big or too small. You can know a lot of people and feel like you are part of the community.

Q: Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative: with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? Where in Greendale would you have lunch?

A: President Barack Obama for sure and if he brought Michelle that would be a bonus. I would take them to Ferch’s. I think they would enjoy that. I would love to know what custard he would choose and his mix-ins. He’s just got so many stories and so many things to tell.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

A: There’s nothing I’m not happy with right now, so I don’t see anything I would care to change. I wouldn’t want to move. If things are exactly the same in 10 years, I’ll be pretty happy.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A: Every time I see a street performer, I always wish I could do that, like be a juggler.

Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

A: Comfort, Love and Family.

Q: If you were cast into a major motion picture and had your choice of anyone to be your co-star, who would you choose?

A: My wife in a heartbeat.

Q: If you had a full time staff member that was fully paid for, who would you choose? Chef, Housekeeper, Driver, Coach, Physical Fitness Trainer or Nanny?

A: It would have to be a chef.
