Greendale, WI

Greendale is a charming village community with a unique history and friendly atmosphere. It was designed to look like an English garden village and is often referred to as a “Norman Rockwell town” due to its New England like traits. This planned community is one of only three “Greenbelt Communities” in the United States built in the 1930s by the Roosevelt Administration. The Village of Greendale is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated by the United States Department of the Interior as a National Landmark.

There are over 300 Greendale Original Homes. The Originals are easy to recognize with their unique cinderblock (“cincrete”) construction and simple, consistent forms. The Originals are conveniently located within walking distance of Broad Street in the downtown Village area. Broad Street is lined with unique boutiques, coffee shops, cafes, a wine bar and other locally owned businesses.

From the “Music on the Green” at Gazebo park in the summer to “The Dickens of a Village” event in winter, there is always something to do in Greendale. The Greendale Entertainment Association (GEA), Park and Rec, Historical Society, Greendale Lions and other members of the community are actively involved in keeping Greendale a fun and welcoming place to be!

As a Southwest suburb of Milwaukee, Greendale is close to all that a big city has to offer, but maintains a quaint small town atmosphere. Throughout Greendale, there is a network of walking paths connecting parks and playgrounds. If you walk or bike along the Root River Pkwy, you just might find yourself at the permanent Whitnall Beer Garden in scenic Whitnall Park.

Education is a top priority in Greendale. The school district is well known as one of the best in the region and consistently scores high on statewide testing. Newsweek has ranked Greendale High School in the top 5% of US public high schools each year since 2008 and over 90% of GHS graduates continue to college or technical schools. For the past several years, Greendale has also been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation.

Whether you are looking for a place to raise a family, a place to meet up with friends for a fun event or a place to retire, Greendale will meet and exceed your expectations!
