Isabella Thiel

Isabella, please tell us about your current plans after high school. What inspired you to choose this path?

I will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison to double-major in Actuarial Science and Music Performance. I have always liked math and business and majoring in actuarial science would allow me to learn more about both of these topics. I have been playing the violin since I was four and would like to continue playing and improving my musical skills, which is why I’m additionally majoring in music.

Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I have two siblings, my sister Kayla who is eight and a brother Blake who is 5. I travel between my mom’s and dad’s house and also have multiple pets: Lizzie (white Labrador), Sherlock (Shar Pei), and Twilight (black cat). I love my family a lot and am excited that I will remain in Wisconsin during college so that I can still visit them occasionally. The rest of my family, including my grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins, live in Arizona.

What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in Greendale?

Ferch’s and Apples of Eden because I have a big sweet tooth!

Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in Greendale?

One of my old friends named Billy, who was a regular customer at Ferch’s when I worked there.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

There’s so many places I’d want to go. First, I’d go to Arizona to visit my family since I didn’t get to go over spring break. Second, I’d go on a trip to Europe with my mom and travel countries like Greece, Spain, Italy, and Germany. Third, I’d go on a road trip with my dad across the US. Finally, I would go visit my friends in their houses and restaurants.

What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?

TV shows I like are Jane the Virgin, Stranger Things, How to Get Away with Murder, Gossip Girl, and All-American. I don’t really have a favorite movie, but I’m always excited to watch 13 Going On 30, Jumanji, Bad Mom’s Christmas, or The Devil Wears Prada.

What’s the best advice you ever received from a teacher? Who was the teacher?

My private violin lesson teacher, Mr. Anderson, told me, “You can only do your best. In a couple of years when you look back on this, it won’t matter as much as you think it will.”

What is your go to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?

Either AJR or the Chainsmokers, or I put on one of my Spotify playlists. I like all kinds of music, so I always have a ton of options.

If you could choose anyone that is alive today, and not a relative: with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where in Greendale would you meet for lunch?

I have no idea who I would want to meet, but I would definitely take them to Kopp’s because everyone should taste their burgers and custard at least once in their lives.

What is your favorite thing or something unique about Greendale?

The fact that most of the houses near the village don’t have basements is really unique!

Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

In 10 years, I plan to be working as an actuary and a freelance violinist somewhere outside of Wisconsin. I also hope to have crossed numerous things off my bucket list, like skydiving.

What show are you binge watching right now?

Gossip Girl

Favorite month? Holiday? And best single day on the calendar?

My favorite months are May through August because I love summer. My favorite holiday is Christmas because everyone is so cheery and family comes together. The single best day of the year is any day where I can be with my family on vacation.

Who inspires you to be better?

My dog, Lizzie. She is always so happy and excited, which reminds me to enjoy the little things about life.

If you could go back over your entire school career what is the one thing you would do different?

Hang out with my friends and go to parties more often. Most of the year I stayed home to study, but I wish I could have immersed myself more in the social scene.

Who or what do you miss the most right now?

My dad and my siblings. I haven’t seen them since school closed from COVID-19 because I’ve been staying at my mom’s house.

What’s the first thing you want to do when this quarantine is over?

Go to my dad’s house to see my family, hang out with my friends, travel around the country with my family before I go to college, and start a YouTube channel.
